Exam results could have been better, but nonetheless, I was quite satisfied with them. Lit: 77% (woot! I got 22/25 for my prose essay!) Physics: 88% (extremely careless... Was probably the most disappointing, because I lost nearly all my marks in stupid mistakes. I suppose being the last of my exams, I got a bit tired) Chem: 92% (was very careless too! But I was happy. I think it was the 2nd top, or tied 1st) Calc: 92% (well, 91 and 2/3 really... Exactly the same mark as sem 1! And to add to the deja vu effect, I topped the exam by a margin of 12%. Not as great as the last time, but I believe great enough) Applic Maths: 95% (top mark! By .5 of a mark. Aka: 0.3%. However, I get rounded up while the other girl got rounded down, so it's the top by 1%!) I don't know why, but both teachers and peers have been 'accosting' and somewhat harrassing me for my grades. I got a bit annoyed today. A bit is quite an understatement, seeing that I told a couple straight to their faces that I didn't want to tell them. Well, Hillary (who sits on my right for applic) asked to look at my marks sheet for the ENTIRE YEAR. I said no, and she got offended. Today, she asked me what my mark for the entire year was (CD was telling us individually, and although she sat next to me, she didn't catch what I got. Thank goodness), and again, I said no. Oh well. I got my marks for the entire year too! Lit: 74% (ah shit. If an A is 75%, I will be heck pissed) Physics: 89% (just another %!!!) Chem: 90% (not too bad, but a drop of 5% from last year :( ) Applic maths: 94% (possibly the top mark, but possibly not. There's probably one other person who possibly got more than that) Calc: Approx 92% Yay! I got the calc prize! *dances around in glee* And possibly physics and/or applicable maths! I know definitely not chem and lit, but I'm happy. At least I got 1 prize :). Speaking of calc, I asked HW a question today, thinking it would be quick. It wasn't. From a supposedly simple question, it blew up into HW asking CD, the rest of the maths department, checking out every single past exam paper she had, the textbook, getting CD to email the guy who wrote the exam and finally google. I felt so bad making her run around for at least half the lesson and probably a lot more after that. Apparently despite my great argument, it turned out the answers were right. I'm not sure if you guys have done argand diagrams (complex numbers), but according to google, the point (0,0) is undefined. The question asked for the arg of something or other, and said it had to be an empty circle. I didn't agree, and so I asked HW. Ah well. I might go do some work now, seeing that exams are in 2 weeks. However, I've been feeling rather depressed, drained and utterly tired. I think it's due to a combination of the exams, the cramming and the results. It doesn't help that I get the impression my teachers aren't satisfied with my grades. VB went through my entire chem paper today (well, I asked her a question after school and it grew into that) and pointed out all my careless mistakes. And whacked me. Haha. And also told me that I have to get full marks in the short answer section. When I looked like I was going to hyperventilate, she changed it to 66/70. Great (I got 60/70 for this exam due to all the careless errors). Well, she was saying that the top people had to go up in the major exams so that our entire cohort would be scaled up too. But that's what all the teachers say. And it doesn't help that because my calc mark has been impossibly high this entire year, I'm terrified it will go down. Speaking of calc and terrified, HW said that I give her palpitations when I ask her questions, because 'if your brain can't do it, I don't think mine can'. It confirmed my suspicions that she's 'threatened' of me... Which made me a bit depressed. Oh well. I will do some study so that I will do well in my exams. Oh, I found my sec 2 maths tests! Was looking through my old stuff for my corpus diary because my mum wanted a piano tuner's number (which happened to be in the diary). I am gonna bring the 8/50 one (the 2nd one which there was a retest for, after I left) to school tomorrow to prove that yes, I was a failure at maths once. Bahahahaha. And we get free ice cream tomorrow! The chem teachers are experimenting with making ice cream with liquid nitrogen. I'm hoping it's safe enough... Imagine if all the chem students got food poisoning. Lol. 10:17 PM Sunday, October 19, 2008 As some of you know, I had to go for a medical checkup for the family's permanent residency application on Tuesday and Thursday. Tuesday's checkup had a blood test that many of you also know I was mortally afraid of. I think I had to right to be frightened. And those of you who said it didn't hurt, you are LIARS. Humph. It still hurt on Wednesday. Probably because my veins suck. The lady (who was a nice, Filipino aunty) was feeling for my veins and went 'you don't have good vein', which gave me some cause for celebration, because I initially heard it as 'you have good vein'. In surprise, I said 'I do?' because I could barely see my own vein and she said 'no no, your vein very bad, very tiny!'. As expected, I cringed. Childish as it might have sounded, I asked if it hurt. The lady said no, and that she had to use a baby needle for my baby vein. She lied, as did the rest of the people who said it didn't hurt. Bah. Thankfully, the rest of the checkup wasn't as bad. The height taking was crap though. I think the nurse was so short that she couldn't see the measurement, and she put me down as 164cm. The last time I went for a medical (which was about 2 years ago now), I was 166cm. Geez. I'm still very worried about tomorrow. Probably more so than for the blood test the other day, and likewise, I think I have a reason to worry. I don't think I did very well in any of my exams... Sigh. I might just go write my eulogy now before getting slaughtered by my teachers and parents... :( 4:45 PM Saturday, October 18, 2008 There is our calculus class dinner apparently on now, but seeing that I can't be in 2 places at the same time, it is pretty obvious I didn't turn up. I did think the idea quite hilarious initially, till I learnt of the details. The initial details were that everyone, including our dear teacher, would be invited to some italian restaurant somewhere for the dinner to celebrate the death of mocks. On Monday, before the physics prac exam, I discovered that the details had changed! The clever people have decided not to invite the teacher, after telling her all about it (well, not the exact details, but she does know there was a plan for a dinner). Despite my protests that she would feel very hurt and rejected, everyone present ignored me. And I don't even know where the bloody thing is, besides the time (and of course the date), which does nuts to help. So I decided not to go! I could have taken the initiative to contact someone for the details, but I really couldn't be bothered. Firstly, I didn't agree with them leaving HW out. Their reason was also outrageous. Knowing that all of us didn't do very well in the calculus exam, they wanted 2 days reprieve before getting the bombs dropped on us on Monday. And they said that HW would feel really awkward, since she'd already marked our exams and that someone would definitely mention it. In my opinion, it's our faults that we screwed the exam up. And we could ask her along on the condition that she doesn't mention the exam, and the same with everyone else. I think that after 19 years of teaching in the esteemed school, she would be understanding enough to give us 2 days reprieve. Unfortunately, my protests fell on deaf ears. Secondly, I didn't know where the bloody thing is being held (seeing that it should have started half an hour ago). Not only that, but transport would probably have been quite cumbersome. And undoubtedly costly. Seeing that the people in charge themselves only had a vague idea what was going on, I didn't want to risk being the only person turning up. Lastly, it'll probably end up being a huge clique plus a few (or maybe just me) outsiders. Most of them are going for the dinner before a friend's party. The others probably don't know what's going on, so I really didn't want to just sit there gulping my dinner down (alike the form breakfast, which was pretty much me sitting there eating my pancakes and talking to my form teacher). But I must agree that I'm not looking forward to exam feedback. The very thought makes my stomach squirm. Despite me complaining that calculus was the worst exam, it turned out that the rest after calculus were much worse in comparison, and that it was probably my best exam. Ah well. Some exams, like the applicable maths and the drama questions for lit, were frankly dodgy. The others, I was just very unprepared for. For the drama questions in lit, I think only 2 questions were doable. 1 was highly tempting. It said to discuss moral, political and social issues. Except that my texts only dealt with 2 out of 3 of the issues, so I didn't dare venture into that question, though it was a very popular one with the rest of the people. And it doesn't help that the first paper back on Monday is lit. Oh &*&%&^$%$. Besides the fact that I positively failed lit, I actually liked my essay for the prose fiction section! Though I think I took a huge risk that might not have paid off... The question was that some social groups have access to great opportunities and rewards due to their social position. Discuss with reference to gender, class or race. I talked about social hierarchy and stuff, but I also said that the marginalised groups are likely to rebel to achieve similar opportunities and rewards as well. Hope it's ok... (In retrospect, though I still like the essay, I kind of wish I never took that risk) Gotta go now. I tried working this whole week, but kept procrastinating. Exams ended on Monday with physics, so Tues and Thurs were reserved for a medical checkup. I tried to study on Wed, but told myself that I had more time during the rest of the week. Not really... Instead of the reams of practice exams I could have done, I've only done about 1 and a half, which isn't very good... Oh well. 5:45 PM Monday, October 06, 2008 Yes, it is 2.12am and I am blogging. Yes, I have exams in 2 days and I should be sleeping. But eck, I'm too tired. Anyway, my last ever week of school (besides exam feedback) has FINISHED! OFFICIALLY! 2nd last day was great. Last day wasn't. Thursday: Well, lessons were boring (chem lab quiz and essay on the 2nd last day of school. Evil VB), but the in betweens were interesting! I went to see CD on Wed after school to ask if I could get my test back early (aka on Thurs) because I wasn't sure if I had a medical appointment (for PR application) on Fri. The test, in my opinion, was too easy. I finished half an hour early. CD saw me working on the last page with 40 minutes to go and looked disbelievingly at his watch, then the test paper to check that it was the last page. I got so bored at the end I kept staring at the countdown clock. Apparently CD kept staring at me the whole time, and asked me if I wanted to hand it in with 1 min to go. And went 'now you know how to do it' at a question I asked him earlier but he wasn't allowed to tell me because it was in the test. Anyway, I was walking past our head of year when she went 'hi Jolene... I was just chatting to CD, and he mentioned the maths test you just did (something along those lines). Guess what you got?' And I guess 80... Then 90... And she gave up and told me I got 100%. Lol. I was standing there in shock because it was the 2nd one that week (the other was calc). HW announced that to the class... She was going round asking everyone personally if they had problems with the test. When she came to me, she went 'did you have any problems with the test?' and I went 'Probably not...' and the both of us laughed and she announced it. The whole class went DEAD SILENT. It was rather freaky, because I was worried there might have been some sort of stampede to chuck stuff at me. So after school, I went with Hillary to get CD to sign her UWA scholarship application thing. And he went 'I thought you were going to get your test back?', and I said 'no, I decided to come tomorrow' then realised that it sounded as though I had decided to pon school and added (rather too late) that there weren't any vacancies for a med appointment (which was true!!!). He didn't quite believe me. Anyway, he then said 'your test was very, very good' and I went 'yeah, ___ (head of yr) told me'. He then exclaimed 'she wasn't supposed to!'. Bwahahahaha. Hillary in the mean time was staring confusedly at our conversation. Lol. She then asked me what I got, and I said 'you'll find out tomorrow. If I decide to tell you', then added 'I did really badly'. CD laughed (something rather rare), and Hillary went 'but your bad is like 85% or something', and CD said 'have you ever gotten below 85% in a maths test?!' Fyi, yes, I have. See post on calc test. CD then signed the stuff, and Hillary was asking me who I got to be my referee, and I said VB and Gaby. CD then went 'why didnt you ask me!' and I said 'well, I thought my other teachers all hated me..' and he laughed again! Then he said 'but I rely on you to keep me positive!' (I told him to be more positive about a month ago, after he kept going on about us not remembering stuff beyond 3 days), to which I retorted 'I didn't think I was too successful'. HAHA. He replied (mock hurt) 'I'm absolutely heartbroken!'. HAHA, AS IF. Anyway, Friday wasn't as great. Some clever peers of mine decided to wreck the school. There was vandalism, honey, flour, shaving cream, dye in soap dispensers EVERYWHERE. They were into the last-day of school thing. The school principal and dean weren't. We all got hauled out mid-way through period 1 (physics for me). TD jokingly went 'I don't think you need your physics stuff for this'. School principal scolded us, asked for names etc etc, all of us were stuck in the school hall till they got the names and stuff. Only got out about an hour and a half later. What a waste of time. Not to mention the entire day, which was spent discussing the matter. Apparently the girls involved all got the same punishment, whether it was putting chairs on the roof (easily reversible) or pouring honey and flour everywhere. No one was happy with the outcome, other than the old baldie, who almost gleefully said the girls deserved their punishment, which was being banned from the valedictory dinner. One of my lit classmates was so pissed at him she broke into tears and ran out of the class. My opinion? I think some of them deserved it. I wasn't too happy that my locker door had honey everywhere, and I think there is a limit. Some of them crossed it, while others didn't, and I think the punishment wasn't very fair. Ah well. Anyway, it is very late, and I should sleep. I am determined to do lit revision tomorrow *shocked gasps*. 2:12 AM
