Parent-teacher meeting is finally OVER. Yes! My last ever one! Well, some bits went quite well but others were incredibly awkward and horrible. 1st subject was calculus. Let W be the teacher's name. Let M be my mum. W: how's business? (she somehow remembers from the 1st day of school last year that my parents own a newsagency) M: oh, good... So busy. Because of the $40million jackpot (lottery) today. W: Did you buy me a winning ticket? It would be nice... I could retire Me: *sorely tempted to tell her that chances of winning the 1st prize are 1 in 45379620* W: Anyway, she is doing very well. Oh yes, she's currently top in the class Me: (not for long) M: oh! That's good. W: She's very clever... Me: HAHAHAHA. *sniggers myself into silence* W (to me): what, don't you think so? You are a very clever girl. (To my mum, while I break out into fresh sniggers) She gets the stuff done in class, and sometimes corrects me too! M: so where do you thinks she could improve? W: Oh, just do more practice... There's OT Lee if you've done the Sadler questions, and heaps more on the portal... (WHICH I DO) M: Yeah, she is a bit lazy (while W stares in utter disbelieve because I'm usually the only person who's done the homework). Always chats with her Singaporean friends (tsk... It's all your fault). It's the last lap of the race, and I always tell her to do better... (she happens to love this race analogy) W: Oh, so she could do more practice... You need to limit your chatting time. M: yeah. Oh, and her dog helps her too. She accompanies her while she's studying every night, you know W: What kind of dog is she? Me: Maltese cross pekingese W: oh, that's lovely (while I dig in my pocket for my mp3 player to show her a picture) M: yeah, so some credit should go to the dog too W: You must love her very much. Does she sleep on your bed? Me: uh, yes... (wondering how Maisy got dragged in) W: My dogs sleep on my bed too (O.o) M: So she is lazy, and she could do more practice and stop chatting W: But to speak in her favour, she still gets her work done and does well in class Me: Yeah, I do my work, then chat! W: Oh yes, she's a good girl... (me sniggering again) That was probably one of the more awkward interviews.. Next was Physics. Oh god, the one I'd been dreading about most. Let the teacher be TD. TD: Hi, I'm ______, nice to meet you. M: Hi... TD: (eagerly launching in and grabbing a marks sheet) I don't have any complaints at all about her. She's doing quite well. She got 82% last year, but this year... Got 40/50, then... 37/50, which is a bit low. M: Yeah, that is a bit low... She should put in more effort TD: Oh, I don't think it's a matter of effort. (to me) How do you think you could improve? Me: (thinking of how I lost 7 painful marks in that horrid test) Minimising careless errors TD: yeah, so those can't really be helped. You just need to be more careful in tests. M: (not very satisfied) But she definitely can put in more effort and improve... TD: Yeah. (to me) How do you revise? Me: Uh... (completely at a lost) Just revise? Well, do study guides and stuff... TD: So just practicing questions? Me: yesh... TD: so maybe you could think about writing study notes? A lot of people do it, but some people I know don't need to... Maybe you don't. M: (still really unsatisfied) But that is quite a low mark. Tsk tsk... TD: Yeah, she just needs to be more careful. She knows her work, and I don't think it has got to do with the mathematical problems. She's got quite a sharp mind (amidst my disbelieving noises) M: But she could put in more effort... Ask more questions, be more detailed TD: (both of us look at each other and are about to laugh, because you can't exactly be detailed in physics) Detailed, maybe in study notes. She does put in a lot of effort, and she knows the class work, does the set work and goes to the tutoring centre (like a help centre which has certain subjects every day), so it should be fine. (to me) Are you disappointed in your mark? Me: Well, actually, yes TD: How's it comparing to your other subjects? (me going 'oh shit') Me: Um........ It's my worst subject. TD: (looking like he's about to burst out laughing) Oh yes, people will be *so disappointed* to have marks like these (the both of us snigger for a bit). But you have to remember about the scaling for other subjects you know Me: But I do calc, chem... (they're considered hard subjects) TD: Yeah, but I give hard tests because if I give everyone 95%, you'll have to work very hard to get that in the TEE (alike the A lvls). So maybe you could apply how you do well in the other subjects to physics (and I see where this is leading to and go OH SHIT). Is it because you don't like physics...? Me: Yes... TD: Oh, OH WHAT?! Me: Well, yeah... TD: what are you intending to do after school? Me: no idea yet... TD: yeah, but I think you'll continue physics anyway. So maybe you could put in more effort... Me: But I put in the most effort for physics because it's my worst subject! And it's still 15% less than my other subjects! TD: (makes some disbelieving noise) Hmm... I won't be able to say much without going through your tests in detail. Maybe you could come see me one of the mornings to go through it? Me: Yeah, maybe... TD: (consulting his marks list) You were 7th last year (an explosive 'WHAT' goes off in my head)... Got 82% overall. So you are doing very well. The highest for physics is only usually around 45/50. M: But she's still a long way off... TD: yeah, but I think she'll be able to get about 82% this year too. Maybe try harder for the exams? Me: Yeah... So yes, that was quite funny too. TD does have a certain dry, sarcastic humour that my mum doesn't know about. Haha. Next was applicable maths. Let CD be the teacher. CD: Jolene is doing EXTREMELY WELL in applic this year (while I snigger again). She's getting 93% (at which I'm shocked into non-sniggers) M: Oh, that's very good! CD: yes, I can expect her to get 95% and higher (me going 'WTH' in my head) M: That's very good! So where do you think she could improve...? CD: Doing more practice. She does the set work. (to me) Sometimes, if you don't want to do all the set work, you can go to the OT Lee and do that. Like calc (he's HOD of maths, and he seems very interested in our calculus class), OT Lee's questions tend to be more challenging. And practice is always good. After all, there are only a certain number of ways to ask applic maths questions (he chuckles). The applic paper every year is very predictable. And you can only ask a linear programming question a certain number of ways (while I snigger. We just had a test on said topic), and I suspect Jolene has found all of them out (I did pester him during a lunchtime to help me with the only question I didn't know how to do from a study guide). After all, in the test, there was a question that was slightly different and I'd never gone through and she got it. M: (apparently very happy) Oh, that's very good. CD: Yeah, but she could participate more in class. I know there're a few people who like to answer every question, but she does participate, when those people don't know the answers to the hard questions I give. And she gets them right most of the time (I have to look away and snigger, then try to compose myself again). So try to participate more. Me: But it's hard when other people want to answer every question! (I was tempted to say that it's hard because he keeps ignoring me, but I didn't think it was very intelligent to do that. Not to mention downright suicidal) CD: Yeah, but I'll try to pay more attention to you because I know you get the right answers, especially with the hard questions (Haha, what a load of bullsh*t. He ignores me every time I say the right answer because he wants people to get it wrong first). So she is doing extremely well, and just has to carry on what she's doing M: Oh, that's good. Thank you very much! Well, I think I'm either 2nd or 3rd or 4th in applic... That crazy girl who usually gets really good grades got 99%, if my eyes didn't fail me. Someone else might have gotten 94%... And I found out why my mum was so happy. I think she likes CD. As in, she finds him charming. She said that he was handsome, and I was trying not to laugh too hard. And she said he looks 40, when he's 50! Hahahahaha... And she said my physics teacher looks OLD. HAHAHAHA. And that the lit teacher was fugly (lol... She did say he was ugly!). Next was chem, which I think must be crowned the most awkward. Let VB be the teacher. VB: ah, Jolene, now this won't take long. She's my model student (BWAHAHAHAHA). Does the work, participates in class (or something along those lines), very sharp, and very FUN (HAHAHAHHAA. I just burst out laughing and that's why I didn't catch the line before and after that). She enjoys chemistry (while I took a sudden interest in the huge beaker next to her, for some strange reason)... It's a very straight, logical subject M: yeah, she does VB: here are her marks. (90s, then an 85) All excellent M: (pointing to the 85) But that's a bit low (that was the lab I screwed up) VB: oh, it was a hard test. And it was put together with that one (which I thankfully did well in: it was a combined test thing), so it was a bit long. And the average, as you can see, was only 63%, much lower than the rest M: so how do you think she can improve? VB: oh, just carry on what she's doing. She's doing very well, top 1 or 2 in the level. *smiles at me* (while I snigger myself into a dead faint) M: that's very good to hear VB: Oh yes. What do you intend to do at uni? Me; No idea yet... VB: how's piano going? The concerto? (while I really go OH FKING SHIT. I hadn't told my mum I'm still doing piano, and a concerto too) M: Uh, good...? (surprised at the strange question) Well, my mum did go, in the car on the way home, 'oh, what was that about piano and the conciertoe (or some mispronunciation)?' And I was like 'uh... That concert that we went to the last time (when we were enrolling, we got free tickets)? Yeah, I'm performing at that'. And she went '1 piece?' and I'm like 'yeah... So it's quite easy!' because if I'd told her it was really hard, I think she'd have asked me to quit and concentrate on my work. And she actually believed! And she was quite happy for me to do it too! Hahahahaha... Anyway, the *best* for the last: lit. Considering I was the last person on his list, he was in quite a hurry to leave. Let OB stand for old baldie OB: Hi, how're you? M: Good thanks OB: (to me) So how do you think you're doing in lit? Me: Uh... I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA (I actually did say that) OB: (taken aback) Oh, but surely you must have some idea... (consults marks book) You got 20/25 for the first essay, and 20/25 for the 2nd as well. (me looking shocked) I don't think you knew that? Me: No... OB: so, you got 20/25 for the long essay too. It's a very good mark for a lit essay, and I think you need to think about what you want to achieve, and how to go about doing it M: So how can she improve? OB: Hmm... Her essay writing is quite good. We do talk about thesis statements and structure in class (well, I don't LISTEN in class, so heck). And she could join in more discussions (me going oh shit...). She is forcing herself to participate more (I am resisting the temptation to reach over and strangle him with his own tie) in discussions, and I think the discussion assignments have helped. (consults marks book again) In the exam, you don't want to get 23 in one part, then 12 and 16 in the other parts. So looking at your marks, they look very consistent (while I attempt not to laugh in his face because they're obviously very consistent as they're the same. Any 4 year old could probably tell me that), so you don't really have to worry about that. I guess you could read up more. (to me) Like in class, we talk about gender, so you could read up more. Have you read Oryx and Crake? Me: Yeah... OB: how did you find it? Me: rather scary OB: yeah, but it was good to study Atwood from that perspective too, wasn't it? Me: YUP. OB: So she's a potentially very talented lit student (WAHAHAHAHAHA), and she should participate more in lit. Is lit considerable in your marks? (TEE, we only count 4 subjects) Me: possibly. (while thinking back to my dismal physics mark) OB: Yeah... She is very talented, and with further improvement, she can go very far in lit (or something pompous and rehearsed like this). She is very well placed in the class. And sorry this was in quite a rush. Funny guy. I knew I didn't do too well in that long essay. Yes, I did a heap of research, but I didn't know how to string my ideas together because there was just too much info to cram in. I do wonder how I did in my oral though... So parent-teacher meeting wasn't too bad after all! I did think my ribs felt broken after all that suppressing of sniggers (it was quite hard not to just laugh in their faces), but here's a summary of what I think was interesting. 1: Maisy getting dragged in 2: Telling TD straight to his face I don't like his fricking subject 3: The disbelieving looks on a) W's face when my mum said I am lazy, b) TD's face when I said physics is my worst subject, c) VB's face when my mum looked ignorant of me doing a concerto, d) OB's face when I said I had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA how I'm doing in lit (he probably never knew that I can talk quite loudly if I want to) 4: TD and VB asking me what I want to do at uni and me saying I have no idea (they really were quite shocked I'm that disorganised in life) 5: Me going 'yup' very loudly and too often to be believeable. All teachers threw me doubtful looks quite a few times, especially CD and TD 6: Nearly all teachers having a 'why is she sniggering so hard' look on their faces So due to pt-meeting, I was so nervous I did NO WORK at all. Am so screwed. Wonder what the teachers would say if I told them I didn't do any of their homework, considering how they said I do my homework. Wahahahaha. And we did get our marks back (well, marks sheets were left lying around quite carelessly anyway) for all subjects, and those we didn't get a total mark back for, I can calculate myself. Calculus: 93 (and I'm amazingly topping the class by a margin of 4%) Physics: 77 or 78 Applic maths: 93 Chem: 93 Lit: 80 Strange how I got the same mark for 3 of my subjects... And considerably lower ones for the other 2. I really need to improve in either, though I think it's more probable for me to improve in physics than lit. And I should scoot off to do my homework. Except there's too much to do, and I guess I'll have to do some during my free period tomorrow. Oh yes, FREE PERIODS, HERE I COME! (remember, I dropped hist? Thank god too) 9:26 PM Sunday, April 27, 2008 School's starting in about a day :(. Surprisingly, I'm kind of looking forward to it. After all, the hols haven't quite been much hols but studying, studying, piano, studying, quarrel with family, piano. I must admit that studying includes slacking too, so I guess it hasn't been that bad. Anyway, this is what I've done over the hols! Chem assignment, physics assignment, (overdue) homework for calculus, applicable maths and physics, revision for chem, calculus, applic maths, physics, practise my concerto. As you have probably noticed, NOTHING for lit. Haha. I'm not usually this hardworking too, if you were all fainting in surprise. It's just that the exams are conveniently 5 weeks away, and I'm hoping to scrape something more than a pass. It is after all my last year of school, and every assessment counts. Exams count even more, unfortunately. But yes, I am incredibly proud of myself. And not to mention how I wormed my way out of the haircut my mother was going to drag me to. :D Oh yes, the school administrator/God-knows-who emailed my dad regarding the time changes for parent-teacher, and I think he/she put the wrong day and date on. I should have told my dad that yes, it's on the Monday instead of the Tuesday and my mum would be gone to a non-existent parent-teacher meeting. But no, I was a nice girl and told him it was the wrong date. Besides the fact that the person who did the emailing must have been half-asleep because term only starts on the Tuesday, it wasn't a pleasant surprise/reminder for me as it shows that teachers/school personnel can contact my parents at any time they wish to. I am starting to get worried... Might want to be nicer to the old baldie (aka lit teacher). Well, I suppose if anyone from the school finds this blog, I would be dead before I could say 'internet policy'. Our school happens to have an internet policy that says 'no student may create a personal web page on the internet without school approval'. So I'll be screwed if they find this blog, and considering how I just said I know the internet policy, I doubt feigning ignorance would help a great deal. Although I don't particularly want anyone from school visiting this page, not when there's so much I don't want them to know about (eg: my marks). Happens that people are, very strangely, rather interested in my grades. Their reasons really elude me. I try to be as nondescript as the classroom walls, but it doesn't really help. And it's a pity, really, for the school to impose such a rule. Because a personal web page would, possibly, help improve the writing skills of the individual, although the cause might be a little lost on the general school cohort. People would really rather go on facebook/myspace, which I guess in some ways do allow people to hone their writing skills, albeit not to a significant extent. But why we aren't allowed personal web pages is interesting. Perhaps they're worried that we might post vital information about the school that would make terrorists descend on it and attempt to attack it? Or maybe there's some sort of a Philosopher's Stone hidden in the depths of the school. I did think I heard a 3-headed dog growling somewhere near the sport department... Strange, really, some of these school rules. Not that I pay much attention to them, as is evident from the fact that I'm still blogging. Lol. I've managed to make this blog reasonably safe, at least from search engines (or so I wish to think). And anyway I doubt they'd care to google random names, unlike certain people *coughDEREKTANcough*. I really hope he doesn't google his name again... But he was an annoying idiot, poking his extraordinary long (and oily) nose everywhere. And I have no qualms in saying that now that I'm no longer in NY. Haha. And the last time, he had told me off because I was accusing him of something illegal, but this time, I'm just stating the facts. Doubt he can sue me over that. Ah well. Shall go for my shower now as I want to watch tele later... 5:54 PM Saturday, April 26, 2008 My brother's a fucking asshole. He just spent the whole afternoon watching videos on youtube. Unfortunately, perth, unlike SG, has shitty internet that shapes (aka makes your internet really slow) your broadband access if you use over the limit, our limit being 10Gb (which isn't as much as it sounds). And he's used nearly 1GB today watching those videos. For 2 days last week, I did watch quite a few videos on youtube too, but then I realised how much I was using and I stopped. He, on the other hand, despite me telling him that we have about 3 more weeks to go and that we really need to stop using so much, has still been watching his videos. This has resulted in us having about 2GB left for 3 weeks, meaning an average of 100Mb a day, which is nothing if I need to do assignments that need a heap of pictures. I am going to be so pissed off if one of those kinds of assignments crops up during the school term and our internet is shitty and it's all because of him and his videos. And I'm going to need to download past exams off the school website, which is going to take up quite a lot of space too. Urgh. I guess that's not the only thing contributing to my current ire. Holidays are ending, and I haven't had much of a break, resulting in me feeling tired even before the school term begins again. I stayed up till past 1 last night trying to find a 24 hour clinic for the idiot whose ASS HURTS. Yes, laugh and make those 'uranus' jokes. I did too. Haha. He deserves it for sitting before the computer for hours on end watching those youtube videos. Oh, I had to postpone my parent teacher interview times later because my mum had to stay on at work. So I'm probably annoying my teachers even before the interviews, as I think they have to stay later to accomodate my sudden change. Gee great. I don't think they're gonna be too happy with me at all. Anyway, shall bring maisy out for her walk now. 5:11 PM Tuesday, April 15, 2008 About the term that's just been: Now that I've finally had more than 7 hours of sleep (well, for the past 4 days anyway), I can think straight and talk coherently! Wow! Well yes, I've been surviving on less than 6 hours of sleep nearly every day of the school term, even staying up till 3.30 in the morning one Saturday to get some revision/study guides done. And waking up at 10 the next morning to continue working. *sigh* I now truly understand the word 'studying' Not that it always pays off. For all that I mugged for physics, I lost 7 marks out of 50 on careless errors (like significant figures and writing South when I'd labelled it North, and not being able to count) which meant narrowly kissing an A goodbye (narrowly being by 1%: got 37/50), and getting the worst mark EVER in my entire physics education. Gee great. And that means that physics, at the end of term 1, has been crowned the worst subject! By a margin of 3% off LIT. Yes, I'm doing better in LIT than PHYSICS. The next thing we know, dinosaurs will be ruling the earth. Might be because we've only had one essay so far in lit, and I did miraculously well in it. Doubt my research essay and oral went that well. :( And I dropped history at last! My history teacher wasn't terribly impressed. She took AGES to sign my bleeding form and did a live commentary while signing it (probably why she took so long), proclaiming to the class that it was a 'stupid and crazy' decision on my part. I was elated though. I really did not want to do the essay the next day (which was 5 days ago), and was happily running past a classroom of forehead-clutching essay writers to hand my form in (not to mention gloating over them). I reckon I might have mentioned this once or twice (or a million times), but parent teacher meeting is the first day back of term. I AM SCREWED, especially for physics and lit (which conveniently are the last 2 interviews for me). I am really, really not looking forward to it at all. It's not too bad for the other subjects, or rather just for calculus (because I did well in the last test due to a complete fluke: I had devoted all my studying time to physics and my lit essay). I can just imagine what the other teachers would say... Chem: Well, she's deproved from last year. I hope she will not slip any further or she will be SCREWED. (didn't drop that much, but my grades are definitely slipping, especially after that horrible titrations lab quiz which I totally screwed up due to that lone explanation question I did not understand) Applic maths: she should STOP DRAWING ON HER TESTS. It makes it very hard for the marker to mark her test papers as she SUCKS AT DRAWING. And she should also cut down on her careless mistakes instead of drawing, and READ THE QUESTION. Physics: Nothing to say except that SHE SUCKS AT PHYSICS, despite putting in so much effort. She should just jump off a building. Perhaps she will learn more about gravity and Newton's laws that way Lit: Needs to SHUT UP AND LISTEN FOR AT LEAST 2 SECONDS. And also turn up to class on time. And participate more constructively, such as sharing ideas. And stop sniggering and playing snake on her calculator. So yes... I was talking to my physics teacher and imploring him not to bitch about me, and here's how the convo went. Teacher: but I've never heard any teachers bitch about you! (which made me wonder about who they DID bitch about in the staffroom) Me: Oh, wait till you talk to ____ (insert lit teacher's name). He's told me off more times this year than all the teachers put together Teacher: What does he tell you off for? Me: Talking in class. Teacher (goes red with LAUGHTER): But you don't SAY ANYTHING in physics! Me: Yeah, but I get bored in lit! Teacher: (still laughing) Who do you sit next to in lit? Me: ___ (insert friend's name) Teacher: So moral of the story is, don't sit next to ___. Me: but if I don't, I'll just talk to someone else anyway! Bah. My physics teacher is funny. Apparently he keeled over laughing last year when someone (from another class) asked if we would do a cool experiment if we had a free lesson because he found the prospect of having a free lesson really, really hilarious. Oh, and on arts fest day, the science department (actually, every department except the maths department. Humph) dressed up as leprechauns. And said physics teacher had to wear green and black STRIPED STOCKINGS. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. And he was unfortunately placed next to the year 12s (aka us), who all started picking on him. He was so awkward (he was BRIGHT RED and refused to look at us) and kept trying to cover up the stockings. Apparently someone 'snapped' (pulled back and let go) it and he was so EMBARRASSED (though I think it was a fellow colleague. Doubt any of us would have been that suicidal). And he had to wear a GLITERRY GREEN LEPRECHAUN HAT, despite being a self-professed glitter hater. HAHAHAHAHA. And the whole science dept was left standing there and taunted by us for about 10 minutes because their music didn't work. Bwahahahaha. The lit teacher was also wearing a LIGHT PURPLE PLAITED WIG. *dies of laughter* Need I say anymore? I need to start on my hol hw... Sigh. The maths teachers haven't uploaded our holiday assignment though, and so I'm procrastinating. I doubt they've even remembered about it actually. Maybe I should start on physics/chem... I hate physics though. Bah. Don't have a choice, so :(. 2:26 PM Monday, April 07, 2008 Just a quick post. Have a calculus test tomorrow, and lit oral, hist in-class essay, lit research essay, applicable maths test and physics test all in the next 3 days. At least it'll all be over by Thurs afternoon (Fri is school's arts fest). Went to ask my applic maths teacher for help, and Keisha was just telling me about how I get favourtised by teachers and how they seem to think I know stuff when I DON'T. That was what happened with applic, as my teacher was just 'and blahblahblah the gradient and q=50', with me going 'wth?!' Anyway, I finished my first draft of my LIT ESSAY. It's 1958words, and the limit's 2000. Yay. Except that I let my lit teacher have a look and write a few comments on it, and so I need to edit it now and I shall cross my fingers and pray I shan't go over the word limit. *sigh* On a lighter note, I've chosen my concerto. Mozart D minor first movement. Gaby seemed a bit worried with my choice though. Had to solemnly promise her to do the work before she agreed. Shall go to bed before I doze off here. Wish me luck for calculus tomorrow (be happy if I scrape a pass). 11:02 PM
