For once, I totally love the article Dr. Andy Ho wrote on blogging. For some reason unapparent to innocent mortals like me, the blogging issue is still buzzing around.
(Mr De*ek T*n, are you reading this? Or did you read that article? Actually, this goes for the whole school...)
I was shell-shocked when I saw that it was Jonathan Au Yong who wrote that article into ST Forum... He's an RI debater, and I saw him on a few occasions. (RJC U-14 debates I think... And of course, Julia Gabriels)
'It seems like we - students, school administrators and society at large - will have to learn how to draw the line between one person's freedom of expression and another's freedom from offence. Yet, there are already enough checks on any offensive speech students may convey on the Internet. These include civil defamation laws, criminal statutes and suspensions from school.'
We really do have to draw a line between real 'defamation' words, and mere pranks... Obviously, different people have different perspectives on the same matter, and I had such a *rare* encounter last year.
Most of the time, we mere students, who only wish to have some self-entertainment, wouldn't think twice as to what we write, and would write rubbish like 'so-and-so is such a God-knows-what'. Apparently, teachers view it in a completely different light. In the first place, if that is so, I feel that the teachers should 'enlighten' the poor student who is in the dark that it is not merely a joke to them, instead of making them pen out useless *reflections* when they don't even feel sorry. Most of the time, students wouldn't dare stand up to teachers for fear of being given demerit points. So, maybe it's time the teachers do it instead?
'Let's tolerate a diversity of views, and not close the minds of kids who inhabit the world within our school gates. Let's have some semblance of balance here. Go easier on the kids.'
Ignore the trash that I'm churning out, but I am just elated that there's such an article in the papers. For those ignorants out there, it's in the Life! section of the papers.
F.Y.I: Those parts highlighted in yellow are quoted from the article. And for those who wish to read the article but unfortunately don't have ST, I could give it to you... Though I am not sure if it will infringe on copyright laws... Hmm, could anyone enlighten me on that?
