Just to follow up on the NKF vs SPH case, the Executive CEO Mr Durai has resigned. Hence, the case is closed, and may have no more mention. Joking...
Now, I would like to talk about the article on revamping the History syllabus in Singapore. Somehow, I think that no matter what, it wouldn't work, since the core of the problem lies in the students themselves. If students just keep having the mindset that History is boring, no matter what drastic actions are taken, it wouldn't help at all.
As quoted from the article, 'Secondary students questioned at a neighbourhood school in Jurong and an elite school in Bukit Timah equated history to facts about the past that were to be memorised and recalled in exams.' Somehow, I think the 'elite school in Bukit Timah' is related to our class, though I wasn't present at the first lesson with the MOE people due to the ongoing Debates competition at that point in time. But as I've said, deep down in my vile heart, I have this vague suspicion that it may be related to what someone in our class(I do not know who it was, nor what was said), about exams just a regurgitation of facts. Maybe it was yours sincerely who said it. I seriously suspect that I may have had amnesia, thus not being able to rouse up any memory on the subject.
From the article, we can see that both students and teachers think that the best way of teaching would be using Powerpoint slides and teaching in a chronological and lecture style. Honestly, even using that method could be interesting. Ms Koh's teaching certainly doesn't vary from that, but why do we all love her lessons? Seriously, I didn't think the visitors from MOE could teacher better than Ms Koh. Quoting one of my earlier posts, 'I would have fallen asleep had they stayed on for another minute'.
And I don't think that Source-based/structured essays require a huge amount of regurgitation, since I would have flunked badly if they did require the facts(I never studied for any test[shh...]). Ms Koh must be really disappointed if she sees this...
With this last quote, I hope it would provide some laughter for you all, as it did for me. 'Ultimately, this kind of training(drawing conclusions from different sources[source-based questions]) makes for more intelligent citizens.' Right. How true this is.
Anyway, just to address the subject of the email. I've already sent the apology to our form teacher, and maybe she would mention it to you all. I am honoured beyond words...
